ROBIN TROWER – Twice Removed From Yesterday 50th Anniversary Edition

Now, I’ve already reviewed the original version of this album. But, I was very interested to hear what this 50th anniversary mix would sound like compared to the classic original.

Along with the album proper, there is a second disc comprised of b-sides and rough mixes, plus a John Peel session from the BBC. The remaster of the original is superb. Daydream just gives goosebumps as the clarity alone is stunning. The extra tracks are mainly edits, apart from B-Side Take A Fast Train which is a non album track and has a big Hendrix vibe, I guess it was left off because space. The Peel session is a killer addition. I hadn’t heard it before and is a warts and all power trio doing what it does best.

It’s worth buying for the remaster alone and it gets an extra half a mark.

HITTEN – When Passion Lasts

Hitten’s last album was killer and I felt somewhat guilty that I hadn’t heard of them before. I mean, the band have been releasing albums since 2014 so what have I been doing missing them for nearly ten years? Thank god for Bandcamp, and the “you may also like this “ recommendations. It must be so frustrating being a band in this wired in age as there is SO much music out there and you are basically on your own.

This is their fifth album and I’m pleased to report it’s just as good as its predecessor. Killer metal played with passion and plenty of melody, and the riff is still king. I reviewed an album by Niagara the other day who are also Spanish, and I forget to mention Hitten when I said I didn’t know of many Spanish bands. How could I have forgot these guys!?

I love all of this album and highlights for me are album opener Prelude To Passion, which is how you should start an album (with a bang), plus it has a great hook and chorus. As well, Unholy Games has a great groove and some killer guitar. There is also my favourite tune Dark Stalker, which has a great intro, a killer riff, and double kicks pounding away, it actually reminds of Iron Maiden at times with the twin guitar.

The whole record is great and is definitely a quality addition to anyone’s collection.

BLACKBERRY SMOKE – Bad Luck Ain’t No Crime

This is a reissue of the band’s 2003 album on their own label, 3 Legged Records. I think country rock sums them up nicely, they are definitely southern fried. Although, they have a huge roadhouse barroom boogie about them as well.

Nothin’ For You is just one of those songs, and Steve Earle would have been proud of that one. They certainly get a huge guitar sound. Train Rollin’ sounds massive and is definitely my favourite tune. I definitely like them more when they crank the power up and they get locked into a southern groove, but Charlie Starr has one of those great storytelling tones to his voice that all the great country singers have. This comes through on Sure Was Good, which is a great song. There are three live songs tagged on and they just rip it up. As a bonus there is a killer rendition of Scare The Devil Outta You, which is a close to being my favourite tune.

You can’t beat some honest rock n’ roll and these guys sure deliver.

BLIND VENGEANCE – Taste Of Sin

This album is the beginning of Harry Hess and Darren Smith’s recording adventures. Both went on to form Harem Scarem and would join Jake E Lee in Red Dragon Cartel.

This album sounds nothing like the polished grooves that Harem Scarem record. It sounds like four young kids got let loose in a studio for the first time. It’s mostly old school heavy metal with the occasional gem thrown in like Manikan. This track shows what power Harry has in his voice. It has a great sense of composition with actual melody and is a step up from most of the other songs on the album. I’m going for the close out song Leave Me Tonight as my favourite. It’s just full of youthful enthusiasm and the joy of having been able to record an album.

This is definitely for collectors, as it goes for silly money.
