LONDON – Non Stop Rock

London are probably more well known for who has played with them than the music they put out. The ex members list reads like a who’s who of the LA glam scene, Nikki Sixx, Blacky Lawless, Izzy Stradlin, Slash, and Lizzie Grey to name just a few. The band have been around since ’78 but their debut wasn’t released until ’85 when most of the above names were doing bigger and better things.

First song Dirty City sets things up for the rest of the album with a full on glam anthem. The production was done by the band themselves and at times the treble is too much, it takes away from the overall vibe. Non Stop Rock is just more of the same fun party rock. Werewolves Of London tries to be a little different with a more adventurous subject matter and vibe. It’s Rock & Roll is straight out of the New York Dolls handbook, a total sleaze fest. Stand Back closes out Side 1, an uptempo sleaze stomper with Lizzie Grey’s guitar way up in the mix.

No Tell Motel opens up Side 2 and, if I’m pushed, its my favourite track on the album as I really like the riff. Party In Hollywood follows and is a close second in the favourite track department with a really cool riff and groove. Masters Of The Airwaves has a really cool opening, and the guitar sound is huge. The last track Radio Stars is ironically the most commercial sounding track on the album, it should have opened the record. Producers don’t only get the best sounding record they can, but they help with the arrangements and that’s what this album is crying out for. I’m sure there is a great record hiding in there  somewhere.

Turkish Delight – Various Artists

This compilation has been put together by Escape label boss, Khalil Turk, to celebrate his thirty years in the buzz and head of Escape Music. The participants are a who’s who of the underground melodic rock/aor scene. Of course some of the players you will have heard of, as they have played with some of the biggest names in the genre. There are 13 tracks on offer here and I will go through some of the best.

Live Again opens up the album after the intro and is sung by Kansas vocalist, Ronnie Platt. A superb melodic rock gem with a great hook and chorus, and some killer playing, it was written by Steve Newman. Crazy Days is an absolute monster of a tune with all aspects of melodic rock represented, with titbits of prog thrown in. Epic vocals from Jerome Mazza and killer guitar from Joel Hoekstra on this one. Another Kansas member, Billy Greer takes lead vocals on Bad Enough, another killer tune that will have you humming the hook and chorus, and again Joel provides the crunch.

Harder They Fall is my favourite track on the album and a freaking monster track with Jeff Scott Soto on vocals, and again Joel ripping on the guitar. The tempo is grooving on this one and there is a slight Deep Purple feel with the keys. Belly Of The Beast sees Chris Ousey singing his ass off with a killer aor monster. This is a must have album if you are remotely interested in aor/melodic rock. Escape have been releasing albums for over thirty years and helping keeping the genre alive.

CIRCUS OF POWER – Vices

This is Circus of Power’s second album, released in 1990. It was awarded 5 K’s in Kerrang magazine. Dirty biker rock n’ roll was how they were tagged, and they certainly played to that image. I think they supported Sabbath on a tour, and that was possibly the best tour for them to be on.

The opening two tracks, Gates Of Love and Desire/ Fire In The Night is a perfect one two punch of groovy metal/stoner vibes. Two River Highway is a heavied up Southern rock ditty, with a hint of Nashville thrown in to make sure all bases are covered. You can just taste the JD. The title track follows and has a wicked riff with heavy stoner vibes. Don’t Drag Me Down has the band deep in Americana territory with a very rootsy feel. Last track on Side 1 is Last Call Rosie, and it is deep in DC territory with an infectious little toe tapper.

Side 2 kicks off with Doctor Potion. This is my favourite track and its just a straight up rocker with a simple dirty riff and groove. Los Angeles has a Butcher And Fast Eddie feel with a slow dirty blues groove. Got Hard is a simple straight up boogie with added southern vibes, and a big dose of slide. Back to the heavy biker grooves with Temptation and simple AC/DC main riff. Junkie Girl has that barroom vibe with a big dose of the south added for flavour. The album closes out with Simple Man/Simple Woman, a killer uptempo boogie and a fitting end to the album.

SMASHED GLADYS – Social Intercourse

With a name like Smashed Gladys I guess you know what you’re gonna get, or maybe not. How many sleaze glam bands were fronted by a female vocalist? Sadly Sally Cato is no longer with us, as she died a few years ago.

Lick It Into Shape is a kick ass opening with a great uptempo groove and a riff to make you want to nod that head, it is my favourite on the record. 17 Goin On Crazy is a very heavily Stones/Faces-influenced barroom rocker. Play Dirty follows and has a dirty sleazy AC/DC groove. Dive In The Dark plugs deep into that AC/DC well again, but with added sleaze. Eye Of The Storm closes out Side 1 and we have a total change of vibe at the intro. Vocalist Sally Cato shows she can really sing during the song’s intro, before the guitars kick in.

Side 2 opens up with Hard To Swallow and it’s a classic glam sleaze anthem. It’s back to Faces barroom territory with Legs Up. Sally Cato sings this style better than her male counterparts. Eye For An Eye starts with THAT riff. You know that one that you’ve heard a million times before. Luckily it’s only at the intro, and the hook and chorus are really good. Cast Of Nasties starts with a Barracuda style gallop, it is my least favourite track on the album. Sermonette closes out the album and reminds me of an early Kiss tune.
