THE JOE PERRY PROJECT – Once A Rocker Always A Rocker

After the poor sales of the second JPP album he was dropped by CBS and was picked up by MCA. Of the three Project albums, this is the worst. I’m not sure who needed the Aerosmith reunion more, Tyler or Perry.

It’s not a bad album, it’s just not a good one either, it sits somewhere in between. There are some half decent attempts, namely the title track, which does a half good attempt at rocking. Then, Women In Chains has a strange weird country vibe, that makes it endearing. As well, Crossfire has a great riff with some nice slide playing and is ok. And, the last track Never Wanna Stop with an acoustic groove. There is a really bad cover of TRex’s Bang A Gong, and that’s about it. The first album is the best of the three by a mile ,and I would avoid getting this unless your are an Aerosmith completist

THE JOE PERRY PROJECT – I’ve Got The Rock N Rolls Again

For five years after Perry had left Aerosmith, the project released three albums and toured sporadically. They had pour album sales until the inevitable happened and he rejoined the Smiths and they all became super rich. This is the second album they released, and of all of the three albums, this is the one that shows what Aerosmith would sound like if Joe was in control.

I actually really like this album – especially Side 1. The opening track East Coast, East Coast is a great sleazy rock n roll tune. No Substance For Arrogance is another great tune with a great riff. The title track has another great riff and motors along at a great pace. Buzz Buzz is just a fun dirty rock n roll song. Soldier of Fortune has a killer sleazy sloppy punk riff that I love as its car crash rock n roll at its best.

Side 2 starts with TV Police and it sounds like an idea that Aerosmith threw away. Listen To The Rock has a typical Perry sloppy riff with a nice funky under groove, and I’m a big fan of Charlie Farrens vocals. Dirty Little Thing is quite a cool pop song with a nice hook and chorus. Play The Game follows and it’s a slow ballad and is the weakest song on the album. South Station Blues closes out the album and is a beast of a tune. It’s easily my favourite track on the album and I love the acoustic intro – boy does this baby swing.

If you took all the best tracks from the three Project albums and put Steven Tyler on vocals, you would have a killer old school Aerosmith record.

THE JOE PERRY PROJECT- Let The Music Do The Talking

The Joe Perry Project were actually formed whilst Perry was still a member of Aerosmith. At the time, the Aero ones were all off their relative faces on all sorts of exotic substances, and the record company were at loss to know what to do with them. The label CBS openly encouraged Perry to do this project hoping it would give Tyler a boost to get him up and rockin’ again. With Perry being on the same label, it would be easy to bring him back when the time was right.

As you would expect, the music does have the same vibe as the Aero ones – but with a lot more Joe. The first and title track is such a great song, that when Perry went back to Aerosmith, Tyler could not wait to sing it live. Vocalist Ralph Morman has a great voice and suits these songs perfectly. Conflict Of Interest could have been a Smith outtake – it’s that close. Discount Dogs has a real funky swagger until the cool time change for the chorus – with some killer Joe guitar. Shooting Star has the real big riff to start and could have been a Smith song. Side closer, Break Song, is an instrumental, and is one of my favourite Aerosmith related tunes – this bad boy is all groove and plenty of Joe. Freakin’ awesome tune!

Side 2 kicks off with the funky tones of Rockin’ Train – a seriously groovy tune. Next up is The Mist Is Rising, and with the very dissonant guitar sound it comes over as a very sleazy song. Ready On The Firing Line seems to be missing a lead off riff, and is a bit jumbled until the funky chorus. Life At A Glance brings the album to a close, and is just a short sharp fun rock and roll song that wouldn’t have been out of place on Toys In The Attic. There were two more project albums after this and they had some good tunes, but this was the best by a mile.
