PLINI – Mirage

This the latest five track EP from one of the most prolific musicians around today, Plini. There is such a thriving progressive music scene in Australia, I may just have to emigrate.

The word fusion gets thrown out whenever Plini releases any new music and with opener The Red Fox that is what immediately springs to my mind. There seem to be two differing time signatures going at once, with the bass and hi hat following one path and the kick and snare following the other, and Plini soars over the top. Beautiful piece!

Five Days Of Rain is a deceptively chill song that musically captures the title perfectly, with heavier bursts to describe the more stormy aspects. Very clever track! Still Life is another killer sonic masterpiece with an awesome groove that goes really low to wake up your internal organs with an added bonus of Tosin Abasi lending a solo.

Aqua Vista starts with that heavy low end bass and the guitar soundscape is sooo spacey. I love the guitar on this one and it is my favourite tune of the record. The EP comes to an end so quickly with Ember. There is quite an upbeat vibe to this piece with almost folk guitar runs played underneath that heavy groove.

I’m a massive lover of instrument music and when it’s played and written as well as this there is nothing better.

PLINI – Finnvox Sessions

Here is another fine release from the ever prolific Plini. This time it’s the Finnvox Sessions released in 2023, well that’s what it says on the cover anyway. This is just a three track EP, and only one sided, Side 1 is blank. Wasteful? Quite possibly, but the music in those three tracks is wonderful.

First track Electric Sunrise is a mix of atmospheric ambient guitar tones with some serious low end groove that sound so clear, if you close your eyes you could be in the room with them. I’ll Tell You Someday follows a similar pattern with more of a slower Prog fusion vibe. Killer playing from the whole band here. Things end oh so quickly with Cascade, the heaviest sounding track of the three. I don’t mean that in a fast way, but the riffs and runs are played over a deep heavy groove. I would say the third track is my favourite of the three.

I could listen to all of Plini’s recordings on an endless loop, I find them so inventive and uplifting.

PLINI – Handmade Cities

This is the debut album from the (seemingly) very prolific Plini, released back in 2016. In fact, he has only released two full length albums, most of his physical releases are EPs.

If you are a lover of instrumental progressive guitar music then this is a must. It’s full of amazing playing, killer grooves, and a great production. This is a killer record from needle drop to fade out.

The title track is one big awesome fest right from the get go. Stunning playing without it being a widdle fest, matched with a great groove and beat. My favourite track however is Inhale. There is so much going on here, with a groove that chops and changes from really cool jazz vibes to prog metal low end rumble. The whole album is just a treat for the ears.

There is definitely something in the water (or beer) in Australia, as there is so much amazing music there right now. More please!

PLINI – Impulse Voices

He’s been described as Prog metal’s version of Joe Satriani, I sort of get the analogy. Both of them have the emphasis on melody, and both get their message across without using a million wasted notes. Plini releases a squillion singles and EP’s, but I think this is only his second full length album.

Plini is my new favourite musician. His talent is phenomenal and it’s so refreshing to hear music played this way. Papelillo is such an aural adventure that takes you from Prog to jazz, with some seriously deep heavy grooves inserted for maximum pleasure. Drool!

If you want to listen to that Satriani reference, the opening track I’ll Tell You Someday is the only one here that I think fits. There is a breakdown towards the end of Perfume that is so cool with the keys and that electronic groove, the sound separation is just awesome. Pan is just wonderous. From the ethereal soundscape beginning, to that low heavy crunch, plus that saxophone works so well – the solo after is insane. FAVOURITE TUNE!

What away to end an album with The Glass Bead Game, it’s such a beautiful piece of music with plenty of twists and groove changes that you feel you just want more. I think everyone should have Plini in their lives, his music is such an uplifting experience.
