Now, Overkill don’t make bad records, they just make slightly lees great ones. Overkill have released 20 studio albums, of which this is album number five. Of all the original thrash bands, I would say that Overkill are the ones that have stayed true to the formula and not deviated from the thrash path as much as their counterparts.

This is a 2021 reissue of this 1991 classic and the first thing you notice is how quiet it is. I love the leading you into a false sense of security intro with the quiet, eerie, and creepy piece before maximum thrash riffage and  groove ensues with the opener Coma. Other than Overkill, Anthrax are the ones you can hear a punk influence in their music, and on this album Thanx For Nuthin’ is that crossover tune. I love it!

A weird choice of a cover in Edgar Winter’s Frankenstein, but it weirdly works. My favourite track is probably the slowest track on the record, the title song Horroscope. Very fat and heavy chugga’s lead the charge in an old school Sabbath homage.

As I said, they don’t make bad records and this is another enjoyable thrash romp.

Welcome to album number twenty from Overkill. With them consistently putting out quality records, Overkill should be up there with Metallica and Anthrax as pioneers of the genre. They are still delivering great thrash records, and this album testifies to that. In fact, this is up there with the best albums they have done.

The opener and title track just melts your face. It’s full of crunch, dynamics, and a cool groove change with an epic solo, it’s as though 40 years just disappeared. This is how it goes for the whole record. Man, these guys are on fire it’s tough to pick a favourite track but I will go for Twist Of The Wick which is a full on epic thrash monster that Metallica could not conjure up today. If someone came up to me today and said what is Thrash, I would put that track on. It’s an absolute belter with lots of time changes to give the old neck a rest.

How can you not love a metal band that is named after a Motorhead album? Overkill are the one thrash band that have stuck to their guns and consistently put out great records without compromising. Along with Anthrax, Overkill were the East Coast’s answer to what was happening over in the bay area.

This is the band’s 19th studio album and it is an absolute monster of a record. Mean Green Killing Machine gets things going at a pace and has multiple changes and grooves to keep the most picky of thrash fans happy. Blitz’s vocal on Goddamn Trouble is just epic with the fast delivery to match the groove of the song. The pace and intensity continues with Our Finest Hour, and old school thrash is alive and well and living in NYC. Dudes and dudettes…this album is killer all the way through, and puts one huge smile on your face from beginning to end. You even get the bonus track which is a cover of Thin Lizzy’s Emerald. I really like this band and this is definitely one of the best thrash albums I have heard in eons.
