LYNCH MOB – Rebel

This album originally appeared in 2015, but this version is a 2022 reissue. I have mentioned on previous reviews how I am a big fan of The George and his style and the grooves he  comes up with. He is last man standing of his generation and the players that were around when they were playing pubs, clubs, and back yard parties. As well as George, he is joined here by Oni Logan on vox, Jeff Pilson on bass, and Brian Tichy on drums.

A very low down and dirty heavy blues groove is the direction that this record takes, and that fits Oni’s vocals nicely. I always look for something a little different in anything that George releases, as he always throws a curveball in there. Sanctuary is just one of those songs. The guitar has an evil tone that matches the groove and Oni’s almost preaching to the assembled throng.

However, my favourite tune is Pinetree Avenue. It’s an awesome slow funk rock groove with a hint of Kings X in there. It hits the spot for me, plus the cherry in the top is the solo. Killer tune! Kingdom Of Slaves is a slower paced track but the impact is huge. It’s heavy blues at its best, and Oni singing is ass off. Killer old school riffage from George and a beaut solo too.

I know George is out there now doing a farewell tour but I hope he keeps recording.

LYNCH MOB – Babylon

George has recently announced that Lynch Mob’s current tour will be the last, and their final gig ever will be on the Monsters of Rock cruise in 2025. This is very sad indeed as George is the last of the Pasadena hot shots. I love his style and I hope he will continue to record music as life without some George to look forward to is not a happy thought. Enough of the sadness, let’s get into the grooves of Babylon.

The opening track, Erase, is stellar. George plays a superb riff that sounds freaking awesome, and I don’t mind Gabriel Colon’s vocals either as it’s a perfect fit for the music. I’m Ready has a riff and guitar sound very reminiscent of VH’s Panama but the beat and groove are quite different, and I love the hook and chorus. How U Fall is a hi octane, double kick pounding, beast with a vocal more in common with Iron Maiden than Lynch Mob. Great track! Million Miles Away is a slow brooding monster with a killer George solo. My favourite tune is the longest tune on the album, Babylon, mainly due to the fact that there is a lot of George soloing.

Not a bad album indeed, and highly enjoyable.

LYNCH MOB – Smoke And Mirrors

This is a reissue of Lynch Mob’s 2009 album that originally appeared on Frontiers. I’m a huge fan of George as he is one of this generation’s best guitar players, with a style and sound all of his own. Joining George on this release is Oni Logan on vocals, Marco Mendoza on bass, and Scott Coogan on drums. Oni and George were only together originally on the Wicked Sensation album, which I loved, so it’s cool to see them back together.

The majority of this album hits the spot, like the killer opening track 21st Century Man, which has all the swagger and groove of before, as well as my favourite track My Kind Of Healer which captures that hint of funk and dirty blues that the band do so well, and George plays killer all the way through. Whether it’s the main riff, those little fills, or the solo, George is the man. Time Keepers is a contender also, that main riff is huge and Oni’s voice is superb.

This album feels like a natural follow up to Wicked Sensation and it’s better. Killer album and George is still the man.

LYNCH MOB – Wicked Sensation

When the arguing and falling out all became too much between Don Dokken and George Lynch, George packed his bags and formed his own band – taking drummer Mad Mick Brown with him. This is the first album that they recorded with the addition of vocalist Oni Logan and bassist Anthony Esposito.

There are three guitar players that define this generation of rock for me, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, and George Lynch. They all came out of the same back yard party circuit around Pasadena and LA. I’m a big big George fan, and this album is a bonafide classic in my opinion, and I’m pleased to finally see this reissued on vinyl.

The opening and title track is killer, and the funky breakdown in the middle section is just sublime. The following track, River Of Love, is one of the best hard rock tracks recorded. A great groove and riff with a superb chorus and melody. All I Want is a killer slower groove, a great chorus and melody, plus lots of George. The very Zeppelin, Dance Of The Dogs, has a great riff and hook. The bluesy slowed down opening to Rain is very good, and has lots more George to tickle your delight. I love the choppy riff to No Bed Of Roses and the track just bounces along. The album closes with the superb Street Fightin’ Man which has a great riff with an awesome vocal.

If you’re a hard rock fan you know how good this album is, but if you’re not, why not give it a try?
