GODSTICKS – Faced With Rage

This is the welsh Prog metallers’ fourth studio album, released in 2017, and it’s the one I love the most. Huge deep riffs and epic grooves, and I love Darren Charles’ vocal phrasing. The Prog metal world is a very crowded place and you have to be pretty amazing for people to take notice. I think Godsticks have quite a unique sound and vibe, and this album just tweaks my groove muscle in all the right ways.

Open Your Eyes just blows me away, the choppy ascending riff and groove before the softer vocal melody kicks in is just wonderful, and is one of my favourite tracks the band have done. There are beautiful softer moments like Revere where an element of funk is even added to the mix. Superb band and album, I suggest this is an album you should acquire.

9/10 from The Grooveman.

GODSTICKS – Emergence

Hailing from Wales, Godsticks’ blend of progressive metal is a breath of fresh in what was becoming a very familiar landscape. ecade), and it spawned a squillion bands trying to do the same. However, Godsticks chose to try and be original in this very cluttered musical area, and to me, they are just superb.

This is the band’s third full length album and was released in 2015 – IMHO is a killer record. I’m not sure if anyone is familiar with the Norwegian band, Jack In The Box, but Darren Charles vocal delivery and tone is a nailed on bomb ringer for their vocalist. The riffs and grooves here also give a nod to that band. I love this record bunches as the riffs, grooves, and melodies are their own and it’s a great kick to still be surprised by a band and their music. Trust me, this is a freakin’ great record. One of my favourite tracks over the last couple of years is Exit Stage Right. The vocal delivery and melody are sublime, and add to that the wonderful groove and choppy riff – it’s a track that I return to often.

I can’t recommend this highly enough and it’s a big 10/10 from The Grooveman.

GODSTICKS – Inescapable

This is the Welsh Prog metaller’s 5th full length release, and sees the band expanding their sound as well as the line up – with the addition of drummer Tom Price, and guitarist Gavin Bushell. Darren Charles has an amazing and unique vocal style, that I would say sounds like a cross between Layne Stanley and Tom Yorke.

This is a superb record from start to finish. There are some very heavy and djenty moments that appear throughout the record, but it’s the quieter more angelic, ambient moments that really give the album that something special. I don’t know if any of you have heard of a Norwegian band called Jack In the Box, but listen to Relief and it’s an absolute ringer for that band. I love this track, as the off time groove and vocal are brilliant. An almost post rock vibe drives Surrender Maidstone, an amazing vocal from Darren and there is also a short but killer solo towards the end. Tracks like Breathe and Resist are really special, but Numb is the one that gets me every time. An amazing groove and the weird drop note in the main riff is pure genius.

Superb band, that I highly recommend.
