GLORY – Danger In This Game

This is the first album from Sweden’s Glory, released way back in ’89 and depending on where in the world you bought it, it had different covers. For those of you who love classy melodic rock/AOR, this is right up your street. As usual with any killer Swedish rock band, they have to possess a killer guitar player and Glory are no exception with the uber talented Jan Grinnick laying down some very tasty licks.

Love him or hate him, there’s no doubt Malmsteen had a huge effect on Swedish rock. Numerous bands appeared after using that blueprint and I would put Glory in that category as tracks like Danger In This Game, Never Stop, and Like An Eagle have the same vibe. Glory however are more melodic, with way more harmony in the vocals and emphasis on the songs. My favourite track however is the last track on the album, Survivor. Love the guitar intro that reminds me of Uli Roth, it’s also got a killer riff and the hook and chorus are superb.

If you see this whilst digging around give it a spin it’s well worth a listen.

TEXTURES – Silhouettes

Textures have reformed and are touring round Europe as I write this. I wondered if they were going to reissue something from the back catalogue or record a new record (pretty please) because you gotta have something to promote on tour right? Anyway, they went for the reissue of the classic Silhouettes album.

It’s heavy as a heavy thing on a heavy train to heavy town, I love this album. Lots of light and shade mixed in with the crunch and the groovy time signatures for you to drool over. However much I love the heavy guitars and deep groovy rhythms I always go back to Awake, with those beautiful melodic vocals as my favourite tune. Yes, I know there are growls in there as well but it’s such a beautiful thing it just tugs at my soul.

This band should be HUGE! Go and find this album and any other Textures album so they can go and record a new opus just foe me. 😇

EYES – S/T

If you read a lot of my scribblings you will have picked up that I like Jeff Scott Soto a lot. I love the guy’s voice and his enthusiasm for just being able to make music is an inspiration. He has been in soooo many albums and projects that I haven’t got the space here to list them all.

I first heard him in on Yngwie’s Rising Force album and thought what a great set of pipes he had, and then when I heard the Talisman albums I thought they were gonna be huge. This record was recorded the same year the first Talisman album was recorded, I’m not sure which one came first but they are both killer in different ways.

This baby slots perfectly into the melodic rock/AOR basket of delights. The Cover of Ace Of Base’s Don’t Turn Around is a definite improvement on the original and works really well. It is a Dianne Warren tune so you’re working with great material but it’s way better than the original. Other than Jeff, the other stand out musician is guitar slinger Steven Dougherty who knows his way around a fretboard that’s for sure. Just listen to the Van Halen-tinged Miss Demeanor as his entry into the guitar olympics. With all the classy tunes on offer here I however am going for the more straight up and down groover Walkin’ Fire as my favourite tune. A great killer riff and groove with a hook and chorus to die four. Wired 4 Love was very close as I’m a sucker for a four to the floor sing a long rocker.

Great album and band.
