DIZZY MIZZ LIZZY – s/t

Dizzy Mizz Lizzy are one my favourite bands ever. Their Rotator record is in my top 5 of all time, and this album is not far behind.

Power Pop is the name of the game here my friends. Well, at least that’s what they are pigeonholed under. You can call it rich tea biscuits with a slice of toast if you want, it doesn’t really matter if the music’s that good. Everything revolves around guitarist and vocalist, Tim Christensen, as he writes all the tunes as well. So much feeling wrapped around great vocal lines, superb riffs, and grooves is what makes this band a very unique commodity. I don’t know of any other band that is this good at playing this type of music.

Every song is a masterpiece; screaming out for your attention. I’m only going to mention my favorite track as I would be here all day raving about the whole album. Today my pick for favourite is Wishing Well, as this brings pure joy to me with the main riff and groove just ticking every box as I bounce round the room. If you ask me on another day when I’m feeling a bit low, then Silverflame may be my choice as this brings all the feels. Please track this album down as you won’t be disappointed.

DIZZY MIZZ LIZZY – Rotator

A killer album by a superb band, and this is one of my all time favourite records. I suppose you would categorize them as power pop, but that would be just scratching the surface as there is so much going on here. They have only made 4 albums since their inception in ’94, and you would be forgiven for thinking that they were not the most prolific band in the world, but in ’98, their main man, Tim Christensen, went solo. They are quite a big deal in their native Denmark and other parts of Scandinavia and have sold a ton of records.

Do you want to know why I think this album is so good? Well, the easy answer is that the songs are just so well written and done in a way that no one else does making them quite unique. They couple melodies and hooks, with great driving riffs and grooves that just appeal to me on every level, and I love Christensen’s vocals and phrasing. He does have a love of all things Beatles, but he does hide it quite well – except on tracks 11.07 (if you know you know), and the final outro of Alexander Salamander.

I love every second of this album, but three tracks really grab me at my bones: Break, which has a superb riff and groove that you just have to groove to, Riff Sang, again with a killer riff that is just amazing, and Take It Or Leave It, which brings the goosebumps out on my arm every time and is one of the best songs ever written. The emotion and delivery of the vocals alone is incredible.

Go check it out on PooTunes before you immediately have to empty your wallet at your local record emporium.

DIZZY MIZZ LIZZY – Alter Echo

Originally formed back in ’88, Denmark’s finest exponents of power pop released two incredible albums, Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, and Rotator, then disbanded in ’98. They reformed in 2016, and this is the second album after their reunion. Tim Christensen is a self confessed Beatles nut and that’s where the band’s name came from. If ever a band deserved some sort of world wide success – it’s these guys. The songwriting is top drawer stuff, and the production and recording is incredible.

The opening two pieces, The Ricochet which is a short atmospheric piece that leads into In The Blood – it’s as good as it gets. A fantastic track that draws you in straight away with its catchy melody and chorus and Tim’s soulful vocals. I would have bought the album for this song alone. Next track, Boy Doom, has quite a heavy groove and vibe to the song – and yet – they still manage to engulf and sing with a beautiful underlying melody. The Middle follows and starts with an echo tinged picked guitar, before the melancholic tones of Tim’s beautiful voice leads into the song properly. So much passion and feel in Tim’s voice and has the hairs on on my arms standing to attention. California Rain closes out the first side and starts with a distorted guitar riff and is very post grunge in its delivery. The thing that sets it apart from all those bands is the melody and the killer detuned middle section.

The whole of the second side is taken up by the song Amelia, which is in five parts. Epic in its conception and delivery – right from the acoustic tones of Part 1 Nothing They Do They Do For You, into the heavy grooves of Part 2 The Path Of Least Resistance, and back to the acoustics with Part 3 Lights Out and its haunting melody and vocal. We then go back to heaviness with the post rock strumming of Part 4 All Saints Are Sinners, then to the close out title track of Part 5 Alter Echo with the instrumental ending that leads into the hidden acoustic ending.

I love this band so much. If they were British or American I think they would have been huge, and it shows just how fickle the music industry can be. This is definitely the album that keeps on giving.
