CROBOT – Motherbrain

This is album number three for these retro sounding heavy groovers from Pottsville Pennsylvania. Fronted by the powerhouse vocals of Brandon Yeagley, these guys tick all the boxes for me. A lot of modern rock sounds as though it was created on the same computer using the same plug in, but not these guys.

Burn and Keep Med Down are standard Crobot groovers but Drown and Low Life sees the band adding to their pallets. Drown has a killer eerie vibe added to the grooviness and Low Life is my favourite tune on the album. It’s got freakin’ awesome heavy riffs and grooves with a monster hook and chorus. Alpha Dawg starts with a really heavy evil vibe and it reminds me a tad of RATM when they groove hard. The pace slows down for Side 1 closer Stoning The Devil, but there is no let up in the intensity. I’ve never thought of them as a stoner band, but this track definitely has those vibes.

Gasoline opens up Side 2 and what a killer track it is. It has a deep and dirty groove with Yeagley screaming out those vocals. Destroyer just rips from the get go. Again, it has that deep heavy riff that slays and the slow down for the main verse is so cool. Blackout starts with a slow moody intro before the riff-heavy guitar lays it down, and the instrumental section just rips. Afterlife is a close second in the favourite track stakes as that riff and groove swings just perfectly, and if I was going to release a single this would have been it. The album closes out with The Hive and we end as we came in, with a patented Crobot groover.

A great album by a great modern rock band and no, they DO NOT sound like Nickelback.

CROBOT – Rat Child

This four track EP was released as part of RSD Black Friday in 2021. All the tunes are on Side 1 and Side 2 is a dreaded etched abomination. I’m just saying that some live tunes would have been great, thanks.

Mountain has Frank Bello from Anthrax guesting, and what a killer groovy beast it is. It’s an awesome chunk of modern, heavy rock n’ roll. Kiss It Goodbye starts like a heavy monster has just riffed in your ears. This one has a guest spot from Howard Jones. These guys know how to groove! What a beast of a song!

Everyone Dies features Styx Zadinia from everyone’s favourite joke, Steel Panther. It’s one big power ballad. It all comes to an end so quickly with the title track Rat Child which has a vibe and groove from way back, with a heavy dose of today.

Great band, and Brandon Yeagley is an amazing vocalist/frontman.

CROBOT – Feel This

This is the Grooveman’s 900th Review!!!

Well, it does say on the hype sticker “Dirty Groove Rock”, and you can’t really argue with that. They seem to get better with every release, and this is one hell of a record. Groove has been missing from rock albums of late, and it’s great to see young bands bringing it back.

Electrified gets things under way and boom what a great track, plenty of groove and riffage, with a killer vocal. Dizzy which is my favourite track on the album, it’s a real heavy groover with a monster riff and hook, and chorus to die for. Set You Free starts real slow before the main groove kicks in; a great use of dynamics and power, and the middle eight is awesome. Better Times follows, and this baby really swings with massive riffage and a wicked groove. Golden slows things down somewhat initially, and then we groove again. It has a killer hook and chorus, and Brandon Yeagley sings his ass off. Without Wings closes out Side 1, and starts out slowly but grows into the heaviest sounding track yet, with a beast of a riff.

Living On The Streets really rocks Side 2 into life with a ripping hard rock monster of a tune. Into The Fire is up next, and the retro vibes are strongest on this one, mainly with the riff. Dance With The Dead is the most commercial sounding track so far with a hook and chorus that will stick in your brain. Holy Ghost has an evil riff that will have you bouncing off the walls. Never Break Me has a riff that is the bastard son of My Sharon’s. The album closes out with the epic Staring Straight Into The Sun. And again, a superb use of dynamics with the most beautiful turning; the dirty evil beast that they are. Killer record and they should be the next big break through band.

CROBOT – Something Supernatural

For some reason I always think these guys are from deep down in the southern US, when in fact they are from Pennsylvania. This is the band’s debut album, released on Wind Up records in 2014. They live in that very retro rock groove space; with the emphasis on the groove. The nucleus of the band is vocalist Brandon Yeagley and guitarist Chris Bishop; Yeagley has one hell of voice. They sort of remind you of everybody and nobody at the same time, if that makes sense.

This is a great album for a debut and the first three tracks, Legend Of The Spaceborne Killer, Nowehere To Hide, and The Necromancer are all high octane uptempo groovers with great riffs and epic vocals. The pace and groove slow down for Le Mano De Lucifer, with a very dirty retro almost Sabbath-style riff, but what a killer vocal. Skull Of Geronimo starts with some nice squealing guitar until we settle down with a slow brooding heavy groover. Side 1 ends with Cloud Spiller a very heavy funk riff with a great hook and melody.

Fly On The Wall kicks off Side 2 and the funk vibe continues with a massive riff but with a slower groove. Next up, Night Of The Sacrifice has that early seventies Sly Stone vibe, but heavier. Chupacabra is more of the same; they have found that groove and they’re sticking to it. Wizards has a very heavy psych groove going on. The last track, Queen Of The Night, is the only song with a change of dynamic; adding a bit of light and shade. I maybe would have placed it in the middle somewhere. Great debut album!!!
