ANGEL – Risen

Well, Angel were one of the last bands I thought would make a comeback, as it all came to an end after their album Sinful. Greg went on to do Giuffria and House Of Lords, and the rest of them went on to do…well, not a lot really.

If you were expecting the pomp of their first album and the song Tower, then you may not be to happy with this. This record is more in line with Sinful and the pop rock style they were doing then, and dare I say early Kiss.

Slow Down is a great song with a great riff and groove, and dare I say one of the best songs they have done. It’s full of energy and Frank still has the pipes to pull it off. I would say Over My Head is my favourite tune. It’s a nice modern take on what they were doing on Sinful, and a full on kick ass rocker with a very catchy hook and chorus.

We Were The Wild is another killer track with Punky Meadows riffing up a storm and Frank wailing like a demon. I was very surprised at the heaviness of some of the tunes here as that was not their forte back in the day. Our Revolution mixes the heavy with the harmony of Franks vocals. The biggest surprise was the reworking of their most well-known tune, Tower. Nothing will beat the original, but they do good job with this heavier and more raw version.

Well done. Not a bad comeback at all.

ANGEL – Live Without A Net

Another band that had everything going for them but didn’t quite reach the heights or expectations. Very clever marketing by Casablanca who had Kiss as the evil and saw Angel as the exact opposite, dressing them all in white. I loved the pomp of the first album and The Tower is a killer opening track to that and this album as well. After that however, they were just another rock n’ roll band even venturing into pop. I mean it worked for Kiss right?

Angel live though, was another thing altogether as they were a great live band. If you were only going to have one Angel album in your collection it would have to be this. Rather annoyingly though Side 1 is paired with Side 4, and Side 3 with 2. My favourite tracks are the Tower and a great version of Mott The Hoople’s All The Young Dudes.

ANGEL – Helluva Band

This is the band’s second album released in ’76, and is a pomp rock fans wet dream. Whether Casablanca records saw them as the exact opposite to Kiss with their dark image, it made perfect sense to market Angel in all white (I remember thinking it was a cool gimmick if it were true). Other than the Tower, I thought the first album was lacking somewhat in decent tunes, but this album is a lot stronger – and with all the keyboards it almost feels like a Prog album.

The Fortune is grandiose and overblown with a killer intro – Genesis would have been proud. Songs like Pressure Point have a more traditional rock approach, with the stock riff-by-numbers sound. They were a quirky little band that sort of existed in their own universe, until the record company put pressure on them and they slowly changed their sound and became just another rock band. This is probably my favourite Angel album other than the Live one.
